The Imperfect (Imparfait) is used to describe actions that were ongoing in the past but were interrupted by another event. For example, “Je regardais la télévision quand le téléphone a sonné” (I was watching TV when the phone rang) or “Elle lisait un livre quand il est arrivé” (She was reading a book when he arrived). The Imperfect sets the stage for the action that interrupts.
